The Only Vanadium Solid State Battery Technology

Our History
EM Plus is an Austrian-based energy technology company focused on bringing next-generation VSSB to global markets. The story begins in 2010, when Tohoku University in Sendai, Japan, formed a research group to study and develop a new membrane material which can enclose Vanadium in a semi-solid state. In 2016, Tohoku University filed Japanese and US patents for the successfully developed Vanadium Solid State Technology, which is intended for use as a battery.

The commercialization of the product began in 2020 when MK Plus Inc., a Japanese manufacturing company, formed a partnership with Tohoku University to commercialize the patented technology. In 2021, a prototype of an industrial-scale battery was developed, laying the foundation for the production know-how.

In Q1 2022, a major milestone was reached when the working prototypes underwent successful testing by TÜV, resulting in the issuance of a global battery performance certificate. Later that year, in Q4 2022, a pre-production facility was launched in Japan.

In Q1 2023, EM Plus was established in Austria in close cooperation with MK Plus Japan. The Company secured EU patents and exclusive sales rights for the VSSB technology from MK Plus Japan and became part of both the Burgenland Accelerator and the Austrian COMET Program. Also, in Q1 2023, MK Plus initiated its market expansion into the United States, marking another significant step in the Company’s international growth strategy.

EM Plus is not a subsidiary of MK Plus Japan, but an independent entity holding an exclusive license to sell, distribute, and further develop the technology in the EMENA region. Therefore, it is more appropriate to describe EM Plus as an EMENA Production Holding rather than a subsidiary. Accordingly, EM Plus holds an exclusive territorial license for the EMENA region and its own IP over the stacking, packaging, and battery management system (both hardware and software).

On April 30, 2024, EM Plus successfully closed a Series A funding round. The capital has been used to support the establishment of a factory in Japan, the development of a project in Burgenland (Austria), and the launch of a new initiative in Poland.

Our Mission
EM Plus operates within a highly attractive and rapidly growing market for battery energy storage, driven by global electrification and renewable energy integration. The Company’s technology is relevant across multiple industries, including utilities, commercial real estate, transportation, and aerospace. This diversity allows EM Plus to remain flexible and adapt to shifting market trends.

The Company’s VSSB offers significant advantages over conventional systems, such as faster charging, greater safety, and longer lifecycles. Early traction with existing clients, combined with a strong pipeline of large projects, demonstrates EM Plus’s potential to scale quickly.
While the sector is highly competitive, with established players in VRB and LFP technologies, EM Plus benefits from increased efficiency, a less complex manufacturing process, lower maintenance costs, and stronger sustainability credentials. These strengths position the Company as a promising player in the global transition to clean and resilient energy systems.
